Sponsorship Program - SPARE

S

SPAREPARE—is an acronym which stands for

Having made it through primary level education, (a remarkable accomplishment in Haiti) the SPARE program currently enables about 45 students to continue with secondary level education, and in some cases with technical school or university.  Many of our SPARE students have grown up in Cite Soleil, one of Haiti’s most impoverished and volatile communities.

SPARESPARE pairs an individual student with a U.S. sponsor.

Student and sponsor(s) correspond via e-mail, developing a relationship over time. Some of our sponsors have enabled their Haitian students to finish high-school, technical school, university, and even enter the work force in Haiti.

It's been a great joy for us to help this program evolve and flourish under the leadership of SPARE's Haitian founder and director Guy Morelus.

Here’s a brief description of what this work is about…

The students in the SPARE program are mostly in secondary school, or the equivalent of what we call high-school. About only 50% of Haitians get to attend any school at all. If they do, many of them do not continue beyond elementary school. There is a huge drop off in education in Haiti after students finish primary school.

SPAREWhen primary school ends, students have to pass a state exam in order to be able to continue into secondary school. Many students never take this exam. Many pass it, but then have no means financially to continue their education. This is where SPARE steps in and provides everything a student at this stage in his or her life needs in order to be able to complete an education and have a shot at getting a job.

In the brief 9 year history of SPARE we have been privileged to actually have two students graduate from the university in Port au Prince, and 6 students are currently in the university. Several others are well into high-school. This program is working!

Sponsor A Student!

A full year sponsorship costs $900.00, or $75 per month, or about $2.50 a day.

Here’s What SPARE Provides

SPARESPARE provides a daily meal, books, uniforms, tuition, tutoring when needed, transportation to and from school, and the relational oversight and accountability needed to stay on track.
